HMS Concert December 2016

Performance:
7:30 pm Sat, 3 Dec 2016
Genre:

The Haslemere Musical Society will begin its Winter Concert appropriately with ‘Winter’ from The Seasons.  Glazunov composed The Seasons for the Imperial Ballet of Russia in 1894.  Continuing the ballet music theme, the orchestra will play excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s much loved Swan Lake.   Finally, the chorus and three soloists will join the orchestra for Gounod’s splendid ‘St Cecilia’s Mass’.  The premiere of the work, the first major work composed by Gounod, was performed on St Cecilia’s Day, 22nd November 1855 in Paris.  Since that time the Mass has charmed audiences and the work ranks among the composer’s best works.  James Ross conducts at this last HMS concert of 2016.
